Description Edit: Eyes tutorial, featuring this same character, is up: [link]

A sister tutorial to the last Cleaning up Lines Tutorial [link] I really appreciated the feedback that I got, so thank all of you, and I'm glad it was helpful to some.

A lot of people mentioned that it's hard for them to sketch cleanly, so the last tutorial didn't really apply. I have the same problem, and it takes a looooot of extra work on paper (erase, erase, draw, erase) to get pencil lines clean enough to start coloring off of. So.... that's why I often turn to Digital Inking!

Here are some of the ways that I do Digital Inking. I know the "trace directly over the original image" is probably the most common method, but it's hard to do without a tablet and also hard for people with unsteady hands, so that's why I talked a bit about other methods.

As usual, comments/feedback appreciated so I can incorporate them into future projects. Thanks and to all of you!

i did that too - you've got to click the second box at the top (the 'paths' button)... right now it's on 'shape layers'. the button is on the line under file and edit and it looks like a square with corners with a pen in it.

Wow, so useful. I was going about it in flash in a much less convenient way. This is more efficient, and I actually understand the pen tool now. Thanks a lot Joulee.

I luv your tutorial, it was very helpful i was thinking tho, for the people like me who leave smudges and lighter pencil lines, another method to clean them up would be to play with the contrast, and then adjust the levels. your way is awesome too, just offering an alternative

I can not thank you enough for this tutorial! I feel like such a dumbass because I couldn't find any tutorials that made sense to me on how to correctly use the pen tool! I had no idea what I was doing, the visuals helped SO much! You're very articulate and that was a great help too. I'm definitely going to start using photoshop for inking now!

Thank you so much, this is just the tutoria I needed. I finally put up a lineart and then i realized, maybe it's just my drawing that's bad but it did help a lot. Now I wish I knew how to color and shade it right...

Whoa.....

Those BEAUTIFUL smooth lines I've coveted for so long.....

I knew that pen tool had to be for SOMETHING... Thanks so much for this tutorial. I haven't been able to try it yet, but it LOOKS so very helpful. But that pen tool's kinda intimidating me. Is it a bit difficult to get the curves JUST the way you want 'em? Oh wait, I'll probably have to mess with it myself

Once I get the line art down, I'll have to figure out how you did that gorgeous coloring!

I think the second method is the best, but when i right-clich it doesn't let me choose "Stroke path". is there any other way to find it? or only by right-clicking on the "Anchor point"?

It's a good tutorial but I have a question to ask. When I try to stroke path after I made a path with the pen, it won't alow me to do it. How do I make it so that I will be able to stroke it?

You used Photoshop 7.0, right?
I have 5.5 (and my parents won't let me update!)
So, are there any different options I can use?
Or am I stuck with what I have?

I kinda need help, when i use tihs tutorial (which I love thank you very much for making it) my pen tool doesn't seem to be on the same settings as yours, when I do a curve it always fills in the curve and never gives me just anchor points each thing I do say the eye brow and then a eye doesn't save onto the outline it just makes a new layer. And when I right click stroke path isnt selectable.

TT__TT sorry I just really need help

I just got a tablet pen for Christmas (Volito2 Pen Tablet) and trust me, free hand inking kills you. Even with the Tablet, it makes it easier but it really doesn't make a difference.

It's pretty cool though. Thanks for the brilliant tutorial! I think the best method I like to use with this Tutorial is the Pen tool. It's easy to use with the programs and equipment I have on my Laptop. (Photoshop 6 and Volito 2)

Only drawback I see is that I have no Simulate Pressure box on my Pen Tool so I can't make line strokes that vary. But my Photoshop is kinda old so...

I like Simulate pressure features on my friends Tablet I used twice. Made pretty lines.

... Lucky people. Hmmm... My pen can vary in pressure but because I'm pretty new to it I have no idea if I can use the varying pressure in Photoshop.

It's also pretty awkward because I'm one of those people who press down hard when I draw.

Anyway... Errr... Nice... Meeting you?

I love the tutorial, and tried to do the pentool one. But the only thing I was having trouble with was...when I moved the line to curve it, the inside of the curve automatically filled with whatever color was selected. So in the end, I couldn't use it afterall. >_>

That's a pretty good tutorial.
It's not uber long or complicated and things are explained clearly.
And even better yet you showed how to ink in several ways.
And without a tablet! Yay!
Good job! Keep it up!
