Description
Oil on canvas, 120 cm X 90cm. Aprox. 100 hours.Portrait of Karen, this was going to be my entry in the trad art day contest, but I just didn't get it finished in time try as I might.
The blue took me FOREVER. ugh.
Photo a bit grainy, but you get that I guess.
Will put a WIP slideshow up at some point, wee bit tired right now.
Much love and thanks to sbaraci and stigmatattoo
Also to Karen for modeling, inspiration, putting up with my bitching about painting blue for 2 weeks, and feeding and watering me during the project.
Oh and also for being by my side through the good and bads

Looking through your galleryand at this in particular, my impression is, you're partial to blue Your use of the color really sings in this painting. Do you use an underpainting to keep things consistent or do you simply lay into the painting?

I love it, the texture is really realistic and that blue is really great. The contrast of the bright velvet on her pale skin is wonderful.
I noticed you were discussing portraits not being sale-able so you have the model's face turned away. I've been struggling with this. I'm in a gallery now and I'm also doing portraits on commission. I really like doing portraits and figure drawings but you just can't sell them on their own. I understand the reason for this, people wouldn't buy a portrait of a random person to hang on their wall. (Myself, I have a whole room filled with faces and figure paintings, but that's what I love) I guess there needs to be enough of an ambiguity about the subject in the painting that you don't feel it's a portrait. I still have a lot to learn!
Anyway, you do amazing work!

Lovely, you some how make it both a piece of art from now and much like one of the old masters done 300 or 400 years ago, all at the same time. Really well done!
