Description
16 x 22Gouache and Watercolour paints with coloured pencil (and a little bit of marker) on watercolour paper
*** This is technically a re-posting of this illustration. I plan to do so with all of my Potter art work building up (hopefully) to having some new stuff to share there after. So if you feel like you've seen this before - you probably have. On the upside, I'm sharing it at a larger resolution and without the DeviantArt watermark on it now ***
I don't think everything I wanted to do with this piece was as well pulled off as I wanted - but it was a good start. It was the first time I got to illustrate going into a memory - and while there aren't many more times until book 6 - I still wanted to establish some artistic "rules" for how I would show them. Now, this memory is being visited differently than later memories will be - but still. First, the memory itself is technically a vignette - and the border is (in this case the diary - which I thought was cool because I could show the entry date - but otherwise, it was just a cute representation of what was happening. The main thing was the use of a different medium - I used watercolors to paint the things from the memory because of their more translucent qualities, while Harry was done using the paints I always use - gouache, which have a more opaque quality.
It was a unique challenge designing a young Hagrid - but I think it worked out. And of course, it was fun showing Tom in colour

epic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm in love with the perspective, the angle, Hagrid's expression (and the way you've imagined him as a kid), Aragog's appearance and the page-from-the-book frame.. that's briliant!!!!

I think most of the time, I've had to age people when I design a new version of them - so it was weird drawing Hagrid so young. But thanks - I think it worked out.
Thank you - as always - for the compliments

This was definitely a good job ... of course you'd leave the BIG moment of this chapter for a Colour Plate, how appropriate and natural!

The colour illustration is always what I choose to do first for every chapter. I try to choose the "big moment" or what I feel is the most significant, or even the one that best encompasses and chan show the most. The rest... that's why I started doing the vignette drawings
