Thank you very much! A very useful tutorial!
A further question: What brushes do you use for this job (soft/hard, what size, etc), and what Brush Tools help you? (Dynamics, etc)?
Thanks in advance,
Irina

Waiii~~~ Thank you so much!
I use the first few default brushes, usually 3-5 px in size, with default hardness (The opacity and flow make up for this). *doesn't know much*
Dynamics? I don't know what that is... D8 You're welcome, Irina-san!

Ah I believe I see your method here. And a pretty nice one too, although it's very time consuming with all those tracing! XD!
A couple of note you might want to add.
When you first scanned this in, what size did you use? because size does matter when you're actually going to color this piece or print multiple copies of your work. The bigger the size of the illustration, usually it's a lot easier to really put in the little details. However the file size will be pretty humongous.
Since you use a tablet, it's easier for you to alter the thickness of the line of your work here. However some people like me, still use a mouse So you might want to mention that for this kind of inking, you really do need a tablet to get that nice variation of thickness
.
Purging the history during this process is a good idea, because I know some people still have probably a 256 mb ram and with PS running, that'll slow things down if they have a ton of steps in the history window.
not really necessary, but you might want to include the version of Photoshop you're using as well. Mainly because older versions have different key function than the ones in the higher versions. And I believe the menus do change drastically as well. Like in your version, the option menu for the tools like opacity and other things are located at the top. While older Photoshops are still at the side like that layer window.
XD! one more thing, I never use the brush tool when I ink. So did you leave the hardness of the brush at default? I notice you didn't set up the hardness of your brush in this tutorial.
Overall, a pretty nice job! . Keep up the good work!

Yes, it is very time consuming!!! But this is how I do it, still. Veeery stubborn, but believe me, I've tried to adapt other styles. To stay on the safe side, it's entitled "How I."
Well, as for the size, I don't really bother too much. X3 For now, I'm not officially making money out of my work, nor do I have plans of printing multiple copies. And I don't really put too much details, do I? Well, maybe next time! (I really, really hate scrolling! I make the files as small as possible.)
*___* I think I did mentioned that you have to have a tablet. And, 256 MB RAM? O___O *remembers my old CPU* (Oh god no~~~ )
Wow, thank you so much for your comment! I missed a lot of details; looks like you know more about Photoshop than I do! (Well, at first, I thought of adding a lot of the basic technical things about the program, like functions of tools, etc, but other tutorials don't have those, so I thought it might make people feel stupid... *___*)
OMG~ I forgot to mention Photoshop CS in the preview! But, well, at least the full-view says Photoshop CS.
And no, I don't usually adjust the hardness of brush tool when I do the lineart. I tweak that when I color the picture (particularly the background). Whaaa~ I don't really follow a set of rules, because I was self-taught (which is not necessarily a good thing DX).

Ah, so that's why I see the windows on top of your illustration ! Ha ha! but yeah, bigger files are good for getting into the details and such, but it's really all up to you if you want to make it small, and if it's small, it'll actually prevent some of the thieves lurking about from stealing them. Oh! also, you might want to save the Jpegs/Pngs at 72 dpi. this way if someone tries to blow them up at twice the size or 4 times the size, they'll have a badly pixelated image when it's printed out
.
"*___* I think I did mentioned that you have to have a tablet. And, 256 MB RAM? O___O *remembers my old CPU* (Oh god no~~~ ) "
XD! u should've seen me with Intel 3 and 128 mb ram. I believe it took about 10 minutes to open the file. And you said "have a tablet?" you didn't necessarily say that it's a lot better to have one at your disposal when you're doing this kind of inking.
"Wow, thank you so much for your comment! I missed a lot of details; looks like you know more about Photoshop than I do! eh heh...not really I just observe many artists and see what their methods in inking/coloring etc. And try to see if they have a similar theory. I usually combine them and came up with my own blend. Right now with inking it's still sketchy as well. Someone digitally ink with just the burn tool and just mess with the hue and saturation, some with the pentool, some with illustrator and then bring it in to photoshop...messyness!. But I see you choose the brush tool because of it's smoothness right?
.

XD I'm self taught as well, but right now I'm getting a bit of professional guidance from a group that does comic books. Fun stuff! there's a reason why softer lines are used for girls, and sharp ones for guys...and soft ones for girly guys !
Thank you for your feedback ! And keep up the good work!!

really nice tutorial!!
but why merge? you might need seperated layers later, maybe? it gets merged when saved as .jpg file anyways..
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
twisted666 In reply to Silveraxe [2005-09-23 09:44:21 +0000 UTC]
Sankyuu ne! You don't have to merge if you don't want to. ^___^ I usually use a lot, maybe around 20+ layers when coloring, so I merge the lineart into one layer so it won't be so bothersome. I never, ever save it as .jpeg until after coloring. ^___^`
Even after I finish the picture, I keep a .psd file of it just in case, you know!

Silveraxe In reply to twisted666 [2005-09-23 14:51:17 +0000 UTC]
ohh i see hehe.. i only curious about it, cause people who never done this before use the tutorials and tend to do exactly what they read
i'm the same, loads of layers XD i usually end up with three files with the same picture: lineart & colored jpg's, and .psd ehehe... eats a lot of space though

WingedIllusion In reply to ??? [2005-09-23 05:07:08 +0000 UTC]
I use a method similar to this to make the lineart in drawings too, but I have a question! How on earth are your lines so straight and smooth? Like, all the other works I've seen consist of precise, clean lineart, but when I use my tablet I have to be extra tedious with it because it looks wiggly...like I drank too much diet coke before sittin' down at my computer...
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
twisted666 In reply to WingedIllusion [2005-09-23 09:58:16 +0000 UTC]
Let's see... ___
Do you have your tablet's pressure sensitivity on?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
WingedIllusion In reply to twisted666 [2005-09-23 15:05:42 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I actually messed with that to see if it would make a difference. It didn't help with the jiggles though... So to compensate for that I've been having to make my images HUGE and work from tiny little section to section and then reduce the size again so it looks smoother. You can still tell the lines aren't exactly "even" though.
