Description Well, I've gone and done it. I've had so many people ask me how I do my lineart and coloring, I've buckled and made a tutorial. Hopefully ya'll will find something useful in this, and grow and expand to create your own styles. =]

Please note that this tutorial deals mainly with the inking part of my lineart.

I'll be finishing this picture, and making it my coloring tutorial, so stay posted!

Thank you to everyone who's expressed an interest in how I art.

Actually, there are quite a few good tutorials out on DA for cleaning up lineart in Photoshop -- here's one I just did a search for. [link] =] *hugs* Good luck!!

When you put the lineart in the computer do you have to do anything to enhance it or whateva?

Well, my scanner is evil, so yeah. I usually take it into photoshop and play with the levels till the background is white and the lineart is still clean. Then I take the burn tool and go to town!! BURNBURNBURN till the lineart is a lovely shade of black.

=] That's all.

Congrats you got a fave by me.
Especially considering how I am doing the whole wolf thing.
Just a quick question..
have you ever wanted to water colour with your line art? to get that washed feel but still have the lineart? have you done this before? if so, how do you watercolour without like going over the lines.
also once doing the lineart like this.. do you scan it and colour on the comp? do you have problems with this?

WhiskerWing In reply to puglover [2005-11-04 13:34:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I have indeed wanted to watercolor with my lineart. But my watercolor skills are less than nonexistant. I use watercolors for my backgrounds, and then go over them with colored pencil to achieve the effect I'm looking for. =]

And since my lines are pretty thick, it's easy enough to stay in them with the watercolors, but if I had thinner lines it'd be a pain, and nearly impossible to control, methinks.

And sometimes I scan in my lineart and then digitally color it, but I'm not very good at digital art, so I usually just color it with colored pencils. But I've had people take my inked lineart from my scraps and come out with some amazing digitally colored art. =]

Aww you could have the steadiest hand in the world and lines will STILL come out shakey I noticed the other day that one of my favorite comic book artists made a mistake while inking, too

I'd like to try micron pens. But I don't know anything about em. Ya think something like this is a good deal? [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WhiskerWing In reply to MiniMooseofBabylon [2005-08-22 12:03:06 +0000 UTC]

If you can't get them from your local store, then yes. But if you have an art store nearby, I'd wait. Based on my own personal observations (which I guarantee "real" artists would scoff at) I don't need THAT many different sizes. I'm barely able to tell the differences in line width when they're really close together, and I tend to use a single pen and vary thicknesses on each line anyway.

So it's a good deal for if you WANT the whole set, but since I only use like three pens, that's a lot more expensive than my working set. If that makes sense.

o_o Wow, it takes you a long time. Usualy it only takes me half an hour to ink and finish the whole thing!

Wonderful picture, and nice tutorial

WhiskerWing In reply to blumgrl [2005-08-17 02:29:07 +0000 UTC]

yeah, it takes me a LONG time to do each picture. That's why it's taking so long to get all the prizes out, and I'm working on them pretty steadily.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

blumgrl In reply to WhiskerWing [2005-08-17 23:28:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh, good luck then.

I just tried using your tutorial last night- I think it must take you longer, as well, because you take more care and you do It a LOT bigger. I like to work smallish, less that a quarter of a 8 1/2 -11 paper.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WhiskerWing In reply to blumgrl [2005-08-18 11:40:55 +0000 UTC]

WOW.

Yes, the one I'm using for the tutorial is even larger than I normally do, and it's two characters on top of that.

But even so, I am never able to work that small...I use up almost the whole page on all my stuff.

If you normally work that small, you'll need to downgrade the pen sizes prolly by two so you don't lose details. =]

I just bought two new pens about an hour ago-

and 0.8, for bigger stuff (I have two .5s) and a .005 in red, just for fun

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WhiskerWing In reply to allykat456 [2005-08-16 23:20:41 +0000 UTC]

*laughs* Actually, I usually work on much smaller paper -- just bigger than regular computer paper.

For this one, I wanted to get a lot of detail, and I felt like doing a larger picture, so I found one of my old, old, old pieces from a great big drawing pad I had once, and decided to use it. I wish I hadn't, because it's not made for watercolors, and watercolors make backgrounds easy. I haven't decided what I'll do for a background yet. =]

allykat456 In reply to WhiskerWing [2005-08-17 21:49:36 +0000 UTC]

Ohh, normaly you work on averge sized paper. Got it, lol!

Well considering the picture is cute you can have a cute back ground. Thats no help at all is it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WhiskerWing In reply to allykat456 [2005-08-18 11:42:50 +0000 UTC]

LOL, I'm more worried about media than style. =]

And yup, I usually use all of a single average-sized paper for a single character picture.
