Description I have used this method twice now for the model edit I'm currently working on. I did this exact same thing for his head, and I used it for his body but I didn't keep the original PMX model because not only did I do some slight tweaking to the mesh itself, I also completely re-mapped him. I used the weight plugin to re-weight him (I will test how well that turned out after I'm done fitting his neck to his body and fixing up his head) but it's possible, if you wanted to, to completely change a model's UV map and use that instead without having the daunting task of having to re-do all the weights - of course, I don't think this will be as easy for heads, you'll lose all your facial sliders.
Anyway, I may do a tutorial on unwrapping in Blender in the future as it would be handy for parts that don't have any texturing.

Blender is free to use and can be downloaded from the website .

I thought of this while reading through this tutorial for Blender. If you're interested in learning more about Blender and maybe even want to start doing some models from scratch, you should check out the rest of the tutorial series.

Absolutely useful! I never managed to make the UV plugin work, so this is just what I needed~

I should choose the name in any way I deem fit, and I chose the name of the tutorial based on the specific audience I was aiming it for. Clearly, you're not the intended audience.
You can create your own tutorials naming them whatever you wish.

I wouldn't call it a lazy method, just an alternate way to make shadows. Many digital sculptors use it to make textures for low poly models before the retopology process.
Very helpful tutorial, thank u!

Btw, why didn't you bake with smooth shading? You can completely skip the afterwards blur step with this.

I am fully aware of that as I watch a lot of videos and general art by professional modellers, but I call it lazy because it's easy compared to how you would have to texture if you were just using PMX Editor, a program that as far as I'm aware doesn't have this capability. If I wanted shadows on my textures before, I would have had to paint it myself and it's time consuming. Discovering this was like discovering a cheat code!
I imagine calling it lazy also draws people in - people want to do things the quick and easy way because it saves time.

To be honest, I only know a fraction of the things Blender can do and mostly learn from other people (it can be a bit of an intimidating program if you're learning on your own) and the tutorial I was following didn't mention baking with smooth shading (at least, I don't think it did? I could have read it wrong or skipped a section unintentionally.)
Thanks for informing me of the feature, it's a useful thing to know.

It's refreshing to know that other MMD users also watch professional modeller videos. They truly help, especially if you have little to no experience on professional 3d software.

Glad you like my comparison

Ah yes, well I have been interested in 3D modelling since I was around 16, I was trying to edit meshes and create new things for The Sims 2.
I discovered MMD when I was 19, and the first model edit I ever did, I exported the model into Blender (I was a complete newb though and had no understanding of bones) because I had a bit of knowledge of Blender by then, but I had to put all editing-in-Blender on hold until I got a more complete understanding of PMD Editor - bones, physics, all the rest. I love creating things from scratch in Blender and because it is so complicated, you naturally want to watch videos to help you understand it even better.
I think, when it comes to MMD, it gives you a lot more freedom with your creations to learn to use other 3D modelling software - I just wish I didn't take me so much time to finish anything, I'm a huge procrastinator.

But yeah, I think it's something MMD users should look into if they want to expand their abilities. I can't create a model/model edit now without sending it to Blender at some point! It really adds to what you can do with your models.

I have often thought about sticking to just Blender because of the amazing things people are able to do with it (the renders and the animations look amazing) but I like the community of MMD too much, which I know sounds strange seeing how so many people complain about it, but on the internet it's been the easiest one for me to integrate into.

Wow, I am very impressed. You seem to have a creative mind when it comes to 3D and it is admirable. And judging by your gallery where you go in depth in stuff other users would simply rely on tutorials is even greater. You sir just earned a new watcher! I wish half of the MMD community had this piece of mind.

It is true, and this freedom is also the reason I started using metasequoia and 3d software almost 5 years ago (wow, just realised the gap. Time flies). I wanted to have full control of my work, so I forced myself and learned 3d modelling. And many 3d software, pro or not, have become very convenient for MMD over the years, so I can see your point on the edits

I would like to ask, have you done any scratch modelling?

Excluding the Roro model edit and the Hogwarts uniforms (those are only up because of being popular and I constantly got people asking for those damn uniforms), everything in my downloads section was created from scratch by me - but if you mean full-body models, I have created a couple but they tend to be very high poly, which causes a horrible lag in PMXeditor.

Lots of links below, but you can also find them in the gallery of my account for WIP's (you'll see more of my from-scratch stuff there since I rarely seem to finish them unless they're just small parts, like my downloads)

I have a Pokemon ranger OC;
orig00.deviantart.net/e64f/f/2… - this is the hair I later decided to give to the character, started off as an experiment because I usually edit hair meshes from other models, but wanted to try something myself
pre08.deviantart.net/8882/th/p… - the more completed hair mesh
orig03.deviantart.net/3372/f/2… - the finished character mesh in Blender
orig11.deviantart.net/19b2/f/2… - just imported into PMX
orig04.deviantart.net/8a7f/f/2… - PMX, organised all the mesh parts and gave their base colours and I think I rigged the entire model too (but no bones in hair YET, wanted to get the main things done first)
orig12.deviantart.net/4859/f/2… - some textures added
like I said, this model is very high poly so she's quite laggy to work with. I've thought about re-exporting a lower-quality of her, it's difficult to bring myself to do it when she looks so nice and smooth at the moment.

I've made a Monster High style body base;
img15.deviantart.net/e374/i/20… - in blender
orig06.deviantart.net/d80b/f/2… - in PMX with textures, also fully rigged
orig03.deviantart.net/9af7/f/2… - WIP pic of expressions being added, I've only done this blink so far

I've made several attempts of full body males, never finished any 100% though;
orig02.deviantart.net/d17f/f/2… - first attempt
img02.deviantart.net/4aa6/i/20… - comparison, the right image was a second attempt
orig14.deviantart.net/c5bc/f/2… - more work on the second attempt

I used  that shadow mapping on my shocking gum. /pwn3d xD

I like the fact, that I don't really have to shade everything in graphical software, thanks to that method.

PS: Blender even works on GNU/Linux (which is awesome for me). XD
