Scratch that. It seems you used a tablet or something. A thing of which I don't own for programs like Photoshop.

I used a tablet for this, but it can also be done using a mouse. It just takes a little longer is all.

Can you tell me how it do it with a mouse. I am using it for a nighttime scene with a video game character. Where the moon is high above him and a field starts beyond that. I wanted to make the wind visible to give it some sort of feeling...I just don't know what kind.

I'd guess that you have to set the brush to a low opacity and stroke many times to build up the colour. The downside is that you have to be fairly quick but precise with it since it's not as easy using a mouse for sweeping strokes, but once you've got much of it down you can use the smudge tool to smooth it out and make adjustments.

With this one I used pencil for the original sketch, and the brushes in Photoshop to ink it.
Other times, I'll either colour over the pencils, or I'll ink them in pen.

It is always most interesting to me to see the process a good artist goes through to create a really good piece of art. It is something I can learn from, maybe adopt for my own, and really makes the fact you spent TIME on it stand out. I am very happy you shared, man. Thanks a million!

Extremely well put together, and a great help. Thanks for taking the time
Out of curiosity, what's the motivation behind not using black and white?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
funkyalien In reply to JonathonDobbs [2007-01-30 22:42:37 +0000 UTC]
I suppose it was practice in a way really. Black and white can be very strong and overpowering colours/shades and I wanted a more balanced feel to this. Also, there's very little in the world that is truely black or white, short of absolute darkness and totally blinding light. Neither are in this pic obviously, but it still could have been reflected from the metal parts on Kaeman's bo staff. I figured a whiteish yellow would be better and seem more like sunlight.
That's the artistic motivation anyway. Honestly, the moment I decided not to use black or white I made it a challenge to myself to not use even so much as a single pixel of either

Cool tutorial. I went to your site yesterday and saw it there first before here. I did have one question though. What's the difference between the outcome of placing the flat colors down, then doing the shading and highlighting from using the base color method for all parts of the image you're coloring?
If the outcome may not be different, what is?

funkyalien In reply to K1r1N-U1t1MuS [2007-01-30 22:35:27 +0000 UTC]
For the most part the outcome is the same; it's just my prefered working method really. I've tried methods before where I did this style of shading on a separate layer, but often when I switched to the flat colours to select an area I'd forget to switch back to the shading layer, meaning I ruin the layer and have to erase it and start that part over.
By duplicating the base layer and shading directly onto that I still have a copy of the base colours to make selections from, and I can quickly adjust the overall tones and recolour parts that I've shaded back into the original colour. I keep both the original and the shade colour in the palettes when I work.
Also, doing it this way means if I set my brush to something like Overlay or Linear Dodge everything will be affected and it has a better overall effect than only changing what I would have shaded if I did it the other way.
I have no idea how much sense that made...

Oh, I forgot to add; what are your methods of selecting, 'cause the way I do it takes forever. Doesn't seem like there is a faster way around, but I'm always learning new things.

Depends on how you're doing it I think.
I duplicate the colour layer and colour on the copy as I said. I use the magic wand tool with anti aliasing turned off to select areas from the original base colours, then change to the copied layer and colour there. Nothing much else to it than that. I make such all the base colours were marked out with the polygonal lasso tool though, again, anti alias turned off.

I know that I learned if I don't understand something in the reading the first time, to read it over again. This might take a few....hundred readings before I understand. Just kidding. Thanks though, I'm sure I'll get something out of that.

Heh, sorry I can't really make it any clearer. I only understand it cos I've been doing it and know how what affects what. Pretty hard to explain otherwise
