Please note that this tutorial WILL NOT:
*Teach you Blender
*Make finished, ready to dance, fully boned models

If you can't do any of this yourself, I strongly suggest just waiting until someone else does it for you. There are several experienced modelers and converters uploading them every day.

Newest PMDe (PMX compatible): [link]
Import your .x or pmd to this one, then save it as a pmx. That will give it room for many many more vertices.

Blender is kinda finicky, so also try converting it to like 3ds/obj/dae first, THEN to .x and exporting it from there.

The download doesn't work or it just won't work on your computer?
The description there has most of the updates that should help if your computer just hates it, but I can track down a diff download if you need it.
Good luck and don't give up!
It seems like ANY programs related to MMD are super finicky, so it takes some patience even if you're a veteran already.

Check the 5th tab over in PMDe. That one has the colors and layers, so you can fix them and their textures from there.

Check your textures the way I said before, then check this:

Go to the colors tab and make sure the first and last colors on each layer are set to 1.

Be sure to save after you've changed anything, and if you still can't see any textures you need to upgrade~

I've imported an obj file and converted it to X file but when I try uploading in PMD it says "import fail" what's wrong?

JerisEnigma In reply to Angel20Devil [2012-07-03 01:58:33 +0000 UTC]

It may have too many vertices. Try importing it to the newest PMD Editor that can handle pmx files. It supports much larger vertice counts.

ok I'm ready to be lynched xD well the scripts and they work fine to me, when I load the model in OBJ format I will read it, but when I try to export it to PMD I do not read, that you can not see, or show me the cube Q: What should I do to solve the problem?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JerisEnigma In reply to JadexHibari [2012-06-11 23:31:27 +0000 UTC]

Again, the pmd import/export can be really irritating sometimes, so just take a deep breath and I'll do my best to help.

When converting from a obj file, try exporting and importing it as a .x or .3ds first. THEN im/export to pmd. Also, with any file type, try right clicking or hitting 'a' to select all of the model, then 'exporting selected'.

Sometimes it works, sometimes... not so much. If you can get it to export as a .x though, you really don't have to do the extra step, just open that in PMDe and save it from there. Even with that though, Blender .x's can be wonky occasionally, too, but as long as Blender will import the new .x version then you know it's going to be nice and export it eventually. Just... fiddle around with it some more. :\

[If all this hassle still isn't working, you can always send me the model and I'll see if I can export it for you. Sometimes it's just THAT particular model, even if others from its game have worked.]

JadexHibari In reply to JerisEnigma [2012-06-12 07:39:06 +0000 UTC]

no, then I managed to export it but there's a problem, when the load on the MMD does not read Bones, and without them I can not make the character move :/
maybe I did something wrong during the export because when I open it with the PMD Bones I do not make them display the same D: I do not know if I explained well
However, below I have put the link to all that have managed to combine as you see it last night and I do not see the skeleton of the model.

JerisEnigma In reply to JadexHibari [2012-06-12 16:27:09 +0000 UTC]

Ahhhh, okay then. Everything worked properly, it's ttly fine~

Bones are never transferred over with this. I've yet to find ANY method that will convert the bones into MMD. They just get lost in translation I suppose. Of course .x files strip away the bones and any other formats than .x/.pmd can't be read my MMD, so you'll need to rerig your models.

This whole tutorial is just to get the model itself converted over.
Though if you DO ever find something that keeps the premade bones on them... Please share, because 90% of riggers here will thank you immensely for saving them hours of time. :/

JadexHibari In reply to JerisEnigma [2012-06-12 16:36:39 +0000 UTC]

I understand ... however I have not tried to see some tutorials on youtube for the Bones but in a video says you have to then copy and paste from another model. I tried to do but does not work :/
so I decided to make her even though I'll admit, it's a pain XD

However, your tutorial for the conversion was really helpful thanks a lot = 3

JerisEnigma In reply to JadexHibari [2012-06-12 22:52:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I know what you're talking about.
If you copy over another model's bones, then you don't have to make them from scratch.
You still have to attach them manually though, so yaaay more hassle.

I'm glad the tutorial was useful after all though~

JerisEnigma In reply to kaiya3609 [2012-05-02 18:19:29 +0000 UTC]

Okay, don't panic, I'll help you out as best I can!
Can you explain what you mean by only one color though?
Do you mean only one part of the textures is working or like they only work when that layer is green, etc?

My general advice for textures is 1) make sure the names aren't too long, 2) if you shorten the names make sure to change them in PMDe also, and 3) set all the layers' colors in the forth tab to white, black, dark grey (top, middle, bottom)
That will get 90% of textures working, but there's still the occasional hiccup, so let me know if yours still aren't working.

kaiya3609 In reply to JerisEnigma [2012-05-02 22:06:40 +0000 UTC]

ok, well so far it works now but the textures aren't in the exact spot their supposed to be. they are all over the place. but i did look up how to fix it. im not really sure that this is it, but people say you have to do something like uhh....UV mapping (idk what that really means, haha...).
o,and i don't use blender, i use metasequoia to convert ^_^;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JerisEnigma In reply to kaiya3609 [2012-05-03 06:43:04 +0000 UTC]

Well if it's converted then you shouldn't HAVE to UV it... It's usually already set up for you, but then again I've only converted in Meta once sooo... IDK. Glad to hear it works tho I guess~

Oh and UV mapping is just a way of telling the computer exactly how to paste a texture on. You can use it to make it read only certain parts of a texture, like when the face and everything are all on one pic, or to stretch a small texture over an entire area instead of repeating it. It's also handy for fitting new eyes or hair on models they weren't made for, which is how many MMD'ers first learn about it.

lol

Laaame, I get that same error like every other time I reinstall Blender. Nooo idea how to fix it unfortunately. I just paste the plugins somewhere else or reinstall Blender and blender2pmd *again*. Even if I swear I did it all the same each time, sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. TT___TT

All I can suggest is that you check this guy out: [link]
Make sure you put the scripts in *every* Blender folder you find, just in case. That MIGHT fix it for you. ;__;

No problem, just gotta figure out your glitch~
And feel free to let me know if it still isn't working after this, I'm here to help! ^^

Okay, first make sure that you have an updated version of MMD. Older versions didn't support certain texture types. I use 7.39, which *I think* is the latest one.

Next, make sure the file names on the textures aren't too long. If it's like 11+ letters, then PMDe will freak out and not save them. Change things like 'tex3_modelface_006.png' to just 'tex3.png' or 'face.png'. If you rename any textures, reopen PMDe and rename them on their layers so that they match.

You can also check that the first color box (Diffuse) is set to something... The number at the end doesn't have to be 1, but that will set the color to white if it somehow wasn't a color. Occasionally imported models will have that box the same color as the window, whether it's grey or brown, etc. This doesn't happen everytime, nor does it even affect the model everytime, it's just one more option to check out.

This may be a silly question, but I still don't get how you rotate the model in pmd editor. I tried the rotate part and it only moves the camera angle.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JerisEnigma In reply to Immortalcatz [2012-04-21 20:50:10 +0000 UTC]

You need to select the model by left click and dragging, which will draw a box across what you want to select. THEN rotate with the arrow-swivel widget thing that pops up. The rotation icons on the window itself will still only rotate the camera.

Oh man I hate that error...! >.<"
Unfortunately, I'm not 100% on how to fix it. Try updating your python: [link] If you use python 2.6 it might be 2.6.2 or something, so get 2.6.6, etc.
Also, check the note I just added to the description. There's likely another Blender folder on your computer somewhere, so track it down and put the scripts there as well.

It seems like I get that error every other time I set up Blender (new computer, reinstall, upgrade, etc). If Blender installs perfectly and I have all my scripts together it works smooothly~, but if I redownload it all separately or get the wrong version of python 2.6.x then it pulls that on me. e__e

Okay! U\I have another question. When I load my model into the PMD editor, Nothing shows up, but it says the model is there. also, after setting the textures, I saved and loaded the model into MMD, just to check if the textures worked, but It didn't have any. Am I missing something?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JerisEnigma In reply to trappedinnothing [2012-03-22 19:24:37 +0000 UTC]

When you first open it in PMDe, at least half the time it's gonna open white or invisible... DON'T PANIC! o__o The first color for each layer is just set to... nothing somehow. Go to the tab with the 3 color boxes (5th over I think) and either click the first box and change it to white or set the number on the far right of it to 1. It also helps to change the middle color to black and the last one to a medium grey, but that's just to make it look nicer.

In MMD, if the model loads but not the textures, try opening a different model that you know has textures on it. If neither one works, you need to download a newer version of MMD, because the oldest ones didn't support textures.

If the second model DOES work, you'll need to go back to PMDe and check the textures of again. Make sure that they're in the same folder as the model itself and that the file names aren't too long. You'll know for sure that PMDe is causing the problem if there's a red error message above the texture's name section in the colors tab. If they're over ~11 letters, PMDe will freak out and not save them. (They'll still show up there, but only until you close it.) Rename the textures if you need to and be sure to rename them in PMDe as well.

Once everything seems to be fixed, *SAVE* and try it in MMD again~

trappedinnothing In reply to JerisEnigma [2012-03-22 19:40:16 +0000 UTC]

It didn't work. My mmd version does support the texures, I know that. Maybe it is because i'm trying to use an x file to do this. I downloaded the blender2pmd thingy, but it won't work. It says python error, check console. So, my friend gave me advice to turn it into a 3ds and then a x file. then he said once it is an x file, take it over to PMDe.

I don't know. that's my guess, but so far my guesses haven't helped me at all. I've been trying to make this model for about a week, and I can't get it to work. Maybe I should just give up.

scale your model to ridiculously huge gigantic big in Blender
and also remove the camera and light from the scene.
Then you can export your X.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

JerisEnigma In reply to trappedinnothing [2012-03-23 01:28:47 +0000 UTC]

Don't give up THAT easily... If you've got it as an x then you're more than halfway!~
Your friend was correct, changing it first to a 3ds/obj/etc THEN to an x will get Blender to work much better. I don't know what the hell is wrong with that Blender2PMD thing, it only works like 20% of the time for me. Best to stick to .x's then save them as .pmd's in PMDe.

Once you have your .x, Import it into PMDe. Just like with Blender, it's rather retarded if you just Open it, even though it's perfectly capable of doing so. After it's imported, you'll likely have to resize it quite a bit (usually x10 but maybe less) but PMDe will add it's first bone for you and sort the layers. If it opens in PMDe *at all* you're nearly done, so again DON'T PANIC. I know it's frustrating at first, but you'll get there eventually.

All you have to do then is play with the color levels for each layer like I said before and it'll be all fixed up.
